i was never that obsessed or fascinated by it's origin, the process and the people behind it. only until recently after i read an article by Mary Lance who did a story on indigo. i think sri threads was another place that got me hooked, and then i saw more shibori, more boro, mottainai....it is endless! every single pieces are different, some darker and some lighter...iridescent green, blue, dark blue...

i am going to attempt a small wearable piece with habu indigo linen paper and indigo cashmere. i have not decided whether it's going to be a jacket or a pullover. who knows it might take years to finish but i know i am definitely obsessed with the color.

what is true blue?

p.s. thank you for all your lovely comments on my previous post. incase if you're curious, those are not my own designs. the linen pullover was inspired different pieces of knitwear. and the aubergine color top was designed by a talented friend - kirsten johnstone.

i miss having some knitting content here
i really miss making things
but today, i am not going to complain about how busy i was
or how little time i have for everything...

i recently read a beautiful post written by a stranger that i have never met
it goes like this "having the perfect life is impossible
working hard and having the special someone to share with
makes my life worth living"

i know it sounds simple and familiar
i am learning to be mindful
to remind myself how lucky i am
to have someone so special to share my passion
and everything i love about life

i finally checked off a couple of projects on my list
i am going to stick with the BIG plan - one project at a time

early summer of this year, i wrote a small post to introduce darlene's new adventure. today wanted to share the launch of knit cook's new website.

with her passion of sharing simple good life, darlene knits and designs simple wearable pieces and musings about cooking and working in her beautiful garden. she believes in home-grown produce tomatoes, beans, peas, other wholesome goodies- that taste sweeter than anything you could ever buy in the shops. she prides herself on making delicious food, preaching the simple pleasures like home baked bread or making her own cider. all her patterns are accompanied by an original recipe.

how many hang bags is too many?

i walked into a store couple weeks ago
and saw this amazing looking
antique swiss soldier mail bag
that i really can't resist..

according to the store owner
it's made in the 30s
it's so old!
there are scratches all over the bag
and even smell a little moldy

but i love it
it has so much character and soul

on the strap
i can still see
his hand carved name, his initials
and number 75 with a swiss cross on the bottom

named after two of my favorite things
the gentlemen whom sold me the piece was super sweet
he gave me a couple of freebies on my way out

i know, you probably heard me complaining that i haven't had time to knit....i have been busy working on a few exciting projects. one of them is a series of lifestyle and knitwear photo shoots i did for designer darlene hayes (former owner of handjive). darlene was famous for her stunning natural hand dyed yarns. since closing handjive, darlene has been busy designing garments mainly using habu yarns. darlene is launching her collection at knitterly (petaluma) this coming weekend. come check out her gorgeous collection and meet darlene in person.

some things just can't be fixed when it's broken. for example that roll of polaroid i waited for months -- all the shots came out like they have been soaked in water, ghostly images, faded shades of orange.

i burned the stew again. so careless! i blame the rain.

it was one the most beautiful place i have ever been. it felt like being in a movie set except this is real. every object was there for a reason. i love how quiet it is. you can hear the grass dancing when wind swept thru your feet. the smell of roses, the cat, the rustic stonewall.... it's so simple but so perfect.

yes! i'm still here...it has been a while! france was magnificent and spain was just as wonderful. we had an amazing trip and experience. so many stories to tell and photos to share but sadly i've been stuck with piles of work since we got back. anyways, just want to check in real quick. i finally got some film back...still need to scan them and download all my digital version. here's one of my favorite that i took (with my diana ) at place de vosges..such gorgeous place. oh paris! i will be back soon :)

this is completely off topic but i thought to just put it out there. a knitter from europe left me a message about some books that i posted last week..so i went to the post office to get a shipping estimate for her. guess what! to ship 3 books across the atlantic ocean cost a whoping $42 (that's the cheapest option)..it's so ridiculous! the postage even cost more than the content. i totally understand that the postal workers need to get paid and with the gas price and all..BUT still, i cant believe it cost that much to ship 3 books, i mean the plane or the boat is not going carry just one package right? i feel so bad. i wonder who is going to buy or ship anything from US anymore...

anyways, some happy thought...last nite, i made a loaf of yummy olive oil cake. i've never make olive oil cake, surprised how good it taste even with the absence of butter. i couldn't find blood orange as the recipe called for..so i substitute with some mandarin oranges. i grated some zest and used the juice as instructed. it was super easy! most of the ingredients you could find it in your pantry. you don't even need a mixer for this recipe. i added some michel cluizel chocolate chips towards the end..cause we love chocolate :) bake a loaf if you're running out of breakfast idea. it's really yummy! recipe is from here.

yes 21 more days to go! we'll be heading to paris, toulouse, cahors...thank you to friends whom already wrote to me about my trip and your list of recommendations. for the next few weeks, i'm going to be busy finishing up some work and practicing my french. this weekend was for the most part quite relaxing. i helped a friend babysat her 4 year old daughter. we had a fake picnic at the front porch, jamie said vanessa can you just pretend you're in the park :) we played hike and seek, drank tea, ate cookies and almonds, strawberries with chocolate sauce...hmm the joy of being with a kid! hope you had a wonderful, restful weekend.

the yarn came last saturday...im a little disappointed with them. the quality, the color..i wanted slate gray and it's almost like purple. i'm usually pretty forgiving when it comes to internet purchase. i don't like to make a big fuss and deal with extra shipping. so all i can do is hope that when i open the package, it's at least close to what i expect to see. well yet another disappointment. anyways, i'm sure it will be alright. it's not end of the world. by the time im done with it. i'm sure it will be well loved and worn. i started swatching several kinds of cable stitches, haven't found anything i like so far. the yarn is definitely lacking a little substance for aran stitches.

on the bright side i do have some exciting news...let see if i get this right... nous allons chez frances en moins d'un mois..hmmm should i say..nous voyageons à frances en moins d'un mois. i really can't wait :) i've been listening to this over and over today, day dreaming about sitting by the side walk of a cafe eating a piece of pain au chocolat :)

my version of "smokin" aka birthday sweater

this sweater came out exactly how i wanted it to be. warm, cozy and comfy. the yarn - rowan yorkshire tweed chunky was sitting in my stash for the longest time. now come to think of it, it was definitely worth the wait while finding the right pattern for it. i've always wanted a simple clean line shawl collar jacket that you can just throw on during cold days. this pattern is actually a men's pattern designed by jared flood awhile ago. i knitted the smallest size in needle US9 and made little tweaks on the collar and length of the sleeves. i also changed the traditional button closure to toggles which i adore even though there were a little more than what i wanted to spend. anyways, i love it. i have been wearing a lot ever since i finished.

so what's next? i just ordered some yarn for p's annual sweater, there will be lots of cables in pretty cashmere yarn..hmmm i will fill you in when they arrive. have a great weekend!

hello people, yes i'm still alive...there's just too much to do and no time to play ..hence lack of updates here. i hope you're well. i just celebrated my big 35 last sunday! i know time flies..when i was little i was one of those girls that can't wait to grow older :) and now i wish i could slow down to enjoy life. i've been good! lots of exciting work. the big project that i have been collaborating with olga for about a year is finally done. the book is now being printed in shanghai and should be here very soon. for those that have not seen any previews, hop over to our habu kal and the ori ami group on ravelry. i'm hoping for some regular posting soon. take care!

It was quite sometime ago when I knitted that infamous kusha kusha scarf. I'm reminiscing the fun of knitting with steel + wool again. I just cast on a shawl with habu stainless steel in mocha combining with malabrigo lace in pearl ten.

I got a new toy from P, a DianaF+ that I've been wanting for a long time. Just got my first batch of film back, only one turned out decent which is pretty disappointing. Nonetheless, I'm having tons of fun with it. Not being able to view the shots instantly kind of bugs me a little but I'm loving the viscerous effect of film + basic b/w prints.

Couple weeks ago, I scored a very cool vintage wooden spool from an antique store. Now, I'm completely obsessed with them. I found a bunch from etsy. The top large one is from ethanollie and the tiny ones are so cute. I love that photo from seven poppies.

I've been enjoying working on a series of small things. Thermis is done. He's in love with it. Another close up shot here. I just bind off wurm. I made it less slouchy so that we both can wear it. It's really cute. I love it. I might even make another one. It's so quick and satisfying. A couple of photos at a new restaurant I'm shooting currently. I also help designed some linen coaster. It's really fun. I'm swatching a couple of new projects for fall. Will share some photos with you soon. Oh! and also my latest obsession.

trip to habu headquarters

Olga and I made a quick trip to NYC habu headquarters earlier this week. Here's some images of the new items we saw at their show room. Aside from their amazing fibers, Takako the owner of habu brought in some beautiful textiles and small handmade items that I absolutely adore. The delicate sling bag that you see hanging on the wall is made out of a type of sheer netting like textile. I was a little bummed for walking away without getting one. Thank you so much for all your support on the book. It's been such a pleasure reading all your wonderful comments and encouragement. Please come see us at fibre space next thursday if you're going to be around in the area. Today, I'm busy cleaning the house, packing for the trip.... and I thought it might be nice to sneak in a post before I leave.

I've been wanting to write a post about my experience growing succulents in our tiny apartment for awhile. But I haven't really had the chance to post anything with all the stuff going on lately. I might still do that at some point. I found a couple cool websites that I would love to share with you guys. Anyways, few days ago, I got some new additions for our house. The lady at the nursery said these air plants are really easy to take care. So I'll see how it goes.

We got a bunch of cool stuff from this week's farmer's market. Some tiny little cherry apples and pineapple guava which I have never seen before. I've not try the cherry apples yet, they were just too cute to past on. They cost me like 50cents, I think. The pineapple guava definitely has some interesting flavor profile. The fruit have a juicy sweet seed pulp and slightly tart nearer to the skin. I read from somewhere that it was used to infused vodka. Interesting! We also got some yummy heirloom cherry tomatoes, winter melon, persimons and a bunch of other stuff.

Lastly, some knitting news... a hat that I finished for P during our many road trips using leftovers cashmere + malabrigo. The picture below is a new project - thermis that I just cast on yesterday. I wanted something simple that I can knit on the plane. Looking at the weather, it might come in handy if I manage to finish it before I land. Alrighty, I hope you all had a great halloween. I felt like I've waited so long to announce this but I'm super excited to share with you. For the past 6 months I have been working on a new book project - Ori Ami Knits with Olga Buraya-Kefelian also known as her blog Olgajazzy . With the help and encouragement from friends and family, our website went live early this month. Ori Ami Knits consists of 15 designs knit entirely out of Habu Textile fibers. To read more about our creative process and information about the upcoming publication, come check out our blog.

There's still lots to do with our new adventure but I hope to come back and post on a regular basis. On another exciting news, I'll be flying out to east coast for a special event at Fibre Space, a yarn shop in Alexandria, VA. Danielle the owner is hosting an exclusive book preview on Thursday, November 5 from 6-9pm. This will be the first exclusive opportunity to preview all designs from the book. If you are in the area come see us and try on the garments as well as enjoy our company and delicious treats!

i miss knitting too

I've been knitting but just not for myself. I got a message from Maryse saying that she miss reading about knitting. So here's a little project that I finished quite some time ago. For some of you that have a flickr account, you might have already seen this in my photo stream. It's the habu bag kit 13 knitted in linen paper and tsumugi silk. If you're curious about the yarn, it's actually pretty sturdy. I've been using the bag on and off for about 3 months now and it hasn't sag or loose its shape. However, I strongly recommend that you line the bag with fabric in order to keep it's shape and longevity. I know, it's an extra step for some that do not like to sew, but I must say, it's definitely worth the extra afford.

Not much news to share on the knitting front or any patterns that I can't wait to cast on. I saw the latest Rowan, nothing really jumps out at me. I did noticed they started offering free patterns on their website. The habu bag is also available for download at selvegde magazine if you're interested. Oh before I forget again, last month I did an interview with Priscilla at knitBuddies and Caitlyn at knitter in the kitchen also wrote a review about flow. Thank you for all your support ladies!

I came across Elaine Kim while searching for something to wear to a friend's wedding in a few weeks. I really like this eco friendly cupro-cotton dress, but it might be a little too casual, the camellia asymmetric silk dress is also cute. Decision. Decision.

If you going to be in NYC, don't miss the opportunity to see the latest exhibit at the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum . The new exhibit Design for Living World is very inspiring. Industrial designer Yves Béhar created a tool for scraping bits of cocoa off the patty; the cocoa shavings collect inside the hollow tool, and when the user turns the instrument over, the cocoa falls into a cup. The user then adds hot water or milk and stirs the beverage with the tool. A traditional Bribri drink. Read more here .

I think it has been awhile since I post or write anything about knitting. And to my dismay, it'll probably have to stay that way for awhile looking at the amount of projects I have on my plate. Our internet was down on friday. According to the comcast guy, some giant truck drove over a cable outside of our building causing major service disruption. I unplug our poor router and airport for like a hundred times thinking there were something wrong with them. Anyways, no internet for a day is probably good. I caught up with some non work related stuff and watch a little bit of tv. Well, as usual nothing caught my eyes last night, so I switch to cnn my regular news channel. Christiane Amanpour was on, she did an incredible segment on muslim youth in ‘Generation Islam’....I was glued and watched the entire two hours documentary. So many emotions ran through my head while watching the report. I have so much respect for people that are there fighting the battle and for people like C.A. willing to risk her life to tell the stories. For a moment I wish I could do something, evethough I wasn't sure exactly what I could do. Anyways, that reminds me of a beautiful story a friend told us not long ago, that she would volunteer her time and help out woman in needs in poor country when her children grew up and left the house eventually. I thought it's so inspiring and noble. And the idea of volunteering had stuck with me ever since. I know I might be a dreamer but I'm going to start with something small. I just signed up with local non-profit to volunteer my professional skills. I have no idea if my help will ever make an impact on anyone lives but I do know it reminds me everyday of how lucky I am.

We just got back from the annual sommelier love fest hosted by our dear friends at the Peay Vineyards in sonoma coast about three hours from the city. Every year around mid August, the Peays host a wine tasting, dinner get together to say thanks to sommeliers who have bought and promoted their wines. It is one of those events that I always look forward to. Just like last year, P and I had a great time relaxing at the spectacular hilltop estate. There were tons of eating and drinking of course. My favorite moments were snapping pictures while walking through those beautiful vines, picking and eating berries during sunset, lay on the front lawn and watch a blanket full of stars....

When I was in art school, watercolor was one of my favorite medium of all. Not long ago, I came across Darren Waterson and fell in love with his work. I love his choice of colors and the intricacies of his composition. My favorites are the parlor and fugue series. Simply breathtaking.

I love this watercolor inspired dress that I recently found on a online clothing site. Can't remember where exactly. Coincidently, I also saw an article written by stylehive about watercolor print --"A subtler alternative to bold prints, watercolor motifs are still dramatic in their own way and add an avant-garde yet feminine sensibility to any outfit."

My favorite textile company Nani Iro designed by Naomi Ito using a mix of soft hand painted watercolor-like patterns are simply to die for. Jean at ladies and gentlemen home actually wrote a post about the company.

I've been meaning to take some photos of me wearing the finished jacket for about two weeks now, but with the traveling, looking for work, doing actual work, I feel like I'm just all over the place lately. So finally, here you go....this is probably one of the most comfy sweater I ever made. I'm pretty happy with how it turned out aside from the armhole disaster. ( Yes again! My usual problem with fitted sleeves) Both sleeves was frog and reknit. If you're Interested to make this be sure to check your row gauge. I actually have to tweak the pattern a little in order to make it work.

I've not yet decided what I'm going to make next. I started P's anniversary sweater so may be I'll try to finish that before I jump on another project. Anyways, any exciting plans for the fourth? I can't believe it's almost July. I'm going to have another summer destash coming up, look out for the next post this weekend.

My first series about beautiful things in japan has come to an end. I hope you all enjoy it. Today, it's my honor to present an interview with talented knitwear designer Olga Buraya-kefelian from olgajazzy, whom had many patterns published in magazine/books such as Interweave Knits, Interweave Crochet, Knitty, Sensual knits, Pints and purls and much more. Olga works as a freelance designer and she teaches knitting, crochet, and design workshops for crafters at all skill levels. She lives in DC area.

Q. Hi Olga, How are you? Tell us how and when did you learn to knit. What was your first knitting project?
I'm great. Thank you! I was taught to knit around 4 years of age by my mother. And around 7 my grandma taught me how to crochet. I remember rust orange wool and metal straight needles, first thing I made was a square garter stitch swatch. And I was taught to knit combination method from the start. On the encouraging point, it is not too hard, if a 4-year-old can pick it up! I think later on I was marked so to speak, when I was 6 it was a very dreary cold summer and I was sick with cold, I tried knitting again and something I did, I remember thin steel long dpn's and one of them going all the way through my palm. My mom was terrified, I wasn't even crying. It is more of a blurry memory, but as an adult I am having a laugh about it quite often, stigmata by knitting needles is hysterical, as you may guess.

Q. OMG! I'm sorry! I'm glad you didn't give up knitting. How'd you get into designing? What was your first published pattern?
I have been knitting through high school and college on and off, and I grew up without having any patterns available or they were too frumpy, so basic concept was taught to me by my mom. Doing simple math and calculations took some time, but having only 1 tiny book of stitch patterns kept us both busy. Then little by little as the steel curtain fell, in early 90's we started getting Verena and Burda magazines from Germany along with Sandra. So I can't even remember what was my first designed pattern, to be honest. I remember playing with this acrylic blend yarn for a long time, making something up, wearing it couple times, ripping and re-knitting something else out of the same yarn. First yarn store encounter of mine happened in Italy, this was then that I actually learnt there is a vast market of yarn brands and pattern support and such. My first self-published pattern was Seasalt Tank, that I published on my blog and now it is also available on Ravelry. I actually still have and wear it a lot.

Q. Where do you find your inspiration for your designs?
It is hard to say - my surroundings, other people, museums, traveling, nature, fashion runway, sleep, internet. It is a a big mystery to me. I know most of the time it's this compilation of images what you process in your head and when others see the outcome, which is your work, that is the result of how I feel about that much, called life.

One of my favorite pattern designed by Olga published in the latest IK Summer 09. Akomeogi which in translation from Japanese means "folding fan".

Q. What are some of your favorite sweaters you've created?
Haha, all of them of course! I never make anything that I won't wear myself. I know there are many tastes out there, different demographics to cater for with knitting designs and patterns. But I always try to make what I personally think is missing out there and what I or other won't be able to buy anywhere else. Some may hate it, some may absolutely love it, I am not trying to fit in. I like reading feedback, but naturally, I see a lot of time when people expect to be pleased and not appreciating the work that has been put into the garment. Pleasing everyone is impossible. I always saw clothes as theatre, you are expressing yourself, just like your haircut. You pick one that suits you best. Recently, I also try to work in more sizes into my patterns, but sometimes you can risk the garment lose its appeal. I wish I could be a stylist for everyone. Last year I was lucky enough to meet Tim Gunn and it was confirmed to me again - it's not what you like to wear, it's more what looks best on you.

Q. What a great response! I totally agreed with you. Do you have any upcoming projects that you're working on that you would like to share with us?
Currently, I have a large-ish project on my plate, but I can't talk about it just yet. Give it couple of months, hope all of you like what you see!

Q. Are you a one-at-a-time knitter or do you like to have multiple projects going?
Multiples of 5 to 7 projects at a time. I like working on something and if I grow cold towards that projects, I let it sit and time will judge it, whether I come back to it and finish it or entirely frog it. But it is rewarding, as you may end up with 2 projects finished in one week! I do enjoy the process, but I am all about the finished result!

Q. Do you have any dreams, goals or plans in 2009 for yourself that you would like to share with us?
Certainly, everyone has a year resolution, but this year I hope to work more and harder as I can see the outcome pleases me immensely. So be sure to be on the lookout for more patterns and designs hitting the stand and here online. I just released Grecian Top pattern, it was a favorite of many for a long time, I am glad it is finally seeing the light of day! I have also contributed to a book publication a while back and I found out the other day that it has landed the cover. [it would be my second time on the cover of a book]. This book is called Pure Knits by Yahaira Ferreira [www.bitterpurl.com] and is due November 2009.

The Petal Halter, featured in IK Spring 09 issue, was inspired by a quilted couture piece with a bandeau-like construction.

Q. Congratulations on getting second book cover for Pure Knits Olga. I can't wait to see it. Thank you so much for taking time away from your busy life to be interviewed with me. Is there anything else you would like to add about yourself?
For one to understand how complex design process is, it is continuous flow and sometimes can be overwhelming, you think of it as you do your daily chores or in commute, but most important I found out is to keep track. Remembering everything is impossible. Carrying a moleskin notebook with me certainly helps to documents ideas and when it is time, some of them see the World.

I want to thank you for inviting me and having this chance to share words of my experience with your readers. You are an amazing photographer and an inspiration to many. Looking forward to seeing more of your work!

Thank you for taking the time to leave me comments on my last post. It's nice to see some familiar names. I think writing things down here or on my moleskin, really help me accomplish things, whether it's mundane grocery list or long term goals. There are just too much to remember. With that said, I finally make a list for my stash. Writing down exactly how many balls of yarn I have lying around the house, in moving boxes, baskets and etc. It's really awesome. Now I can compare my stash list to a list of things I want to make, instead of spending hours on the internet, surfing from on site to another trying to figure out the right yarn for the right pattern in my head. I don't why I never thought of doing that. There's a similar feature offer by ravelry but of course I never use it. I bet it's useful.

Here's another stash busting project I just finished recently. The yarn is from Artfibers. I actually don't quite remember the name, it's either Tsuki or Whisper. I've lost the little paper tags during many of moves. It would be helpful if I actually wrote down the name and yardage somewhere. Anyways, long story short, I was having the hardest time deciding what to make with it. I don't have a lot, only two balls. At first I was thinking may be a triangular shawl or a camisole. However, if I ran out of yarn halfway through the shawl pattern, it would be tough to find anything to substitute and a mohair camisole for summer, hmmm it's just not quite right. So I flipped through some stitch pattern books and found this simple feather and fan pattern. Which worked out incredibly well with the yarn. I used almost every bit of it. The size of the shawl also came out perfect. It's just nice to drape over my shoulder with my sun dress for chilly spring day, which we tend to get a lot over here.

A friend gave me this orchid for my birthday this year. I was kinda upset when I saw the flowers began to fall. I love plants, but I'm never good at taking care of them. Orchid is probably by far the toughest plant to take care...you either water it too much or too little. I've killed a dozens in my life, I wanted to capture its beauty before I see this one slowly dyeing.

I might have found the perfect fabric to line the habu linen bag. It is super warm here for the past couple days, I need to take a break from my wooly, mohair projects for a bit and dive into sewing. My hands are sweaty as I'm typing this post. No Kiddin! There's a glass of cold beer and a giant bottle of water sitting beside my laptop. Knitting from stash has been tough since I bought most of those yarn on sales and has no clue what to make with them. Anyways, I have a shawl project near completion. After that, I think I'm going to start my summer knits. What do you have on your needles?

It feels great to finally crossing things off my forever growing to-do list. I'm still sticking to my resolutions - finish your UFO's, knit from your stash and learn a new skill. I bought this kit about a year ago, I think. It was pretty much a love at first sight. I like the clean line design and the rich textures created with the combination of silk, mohair and paper.

One of the reason it took me so long to finish this project, mainly because my lack of knitting mojo last year. The construction of the jacket is actually pretty straight forward. The only new technique to me was installing the side pockets. In order to avoid bulky-ness, I used only two strands of tsumugi to make the pockets.

Pattern : Nanako jacket habu kit 67.
Yarn : Two strands of tsumugi, one strand of mohair and one strand of paper moire.

There wasn't much modifications to the pattern. I used one needle (US 10.5) for the entire jacket, and my gauge actually turned out pretty accurate. The only problem I found was the collar. It was about four inches short the first time I tried to install it. Not sure if it's a typo or pattern error, I added about 12 sts extra in order for it to fit in the neckline. Both sleeves are a tad long, but I kinda like the idea of being able to roll it up my elbows. I think I'm going to wear this jacket a lot. Couple more views here and here. Going to tackle another item on my list -- habu bag up next.

Thank you so much for all your birthday wishes.

These cute tiny little shoes were done and gifted away, so as the apron I made over the weekend. They both turned out great. I was scrambling trying to finish the apron before I head to the party, so didn't even get the chance to snap a picture. Anyways, the birthday girl was super delighted when she found out I actually made that for her. I'm working on a tutorial for these tiny little shoes, check back on my next post if you're interested. I'm back! We had a great time hiking bell rock in Sedona and the wedding was beautiful. The day before we went for our hike, a friend told us she felt some vortex energy midway up the mountain but I didn't feel a thing. Though, the view was just stunning. Thank you for the tips about lys there. We were in a hurry to attend another party after the wedding, so no yarn shopping this time.

Not long ago someone had told me about this tiny little japanese fabric store in sunset district called peopod fabric. So I went there to check it out after my pilates class. It's really cute. They have some really pretty fabric selections. I got some dark brown linen for a bag, some Alexander Henry and Amy Butler's for an apron project.

This pretty green yorkshire tweed yarn was supposed to be porom. Unfortunately it turned out way too big. So ripped it apart and made into this instead. A free pattern I found from ravelry. I also have another project on the blocking board. I'm hoping to finish seaming this weekend. Hmmm...what else is new here. I turned thirty-four last saturday. I got pampered with a session of mani and padi, a yummy lobster dinner prepared by hub and a very cool spice rack. A very cool birthday, indeed. Have a good week everyone.

Buttons and more buttons..antler, tiny mother of pearls and ceramic antique buttons. Every year I go to stitches I spend way too much money at this stall.

I bought a hank of habu wool roving to swatch with some ramie I have in my stash. A potential new project may be. I was trying very hard not to buy yarn. But we all need some yarn shopping to keep us sane. Don't we?

I also caved in and got a pair of asciano circular. This is probably the most expensive needle I ever own. The rosewood colour is really pretty and feels great. The cord is a little thick but the joint is super smooth. I haven't had the chance to use extensively yet, will let you guys know what I think.

Last but not least, I cast on a new project eventhough there are still million things to finish. It's the cable cowl pattern from talented Olga with some unknown possum yarn I bought years ago. I'm heading to Sedona, Arizona to attend a wedding this coming weekend. Does any know any yarn store worth visiting? Have a good week everyone.

butter and cream

One of my favorite thing for breakfast is scone and coffee. Sometimes I like to make it on my own when I'm in the mood for baking. I'm not a superb baker but I can handle easy follow recipes....and things like scone, it's really hard to screw up. I found this recipe online the other day. The pictures the author posted looks incredible, ninety three people commented on it and the recipe actually calls for butter plus one cup of heavy cream, that's gotto be good. I couldn't find fresh cranberries, so I used the dried ones and added some orange peel. Total prep and bake time about an hour and 15mins. Hmmm the verdict, delish! I would totally make this again.

I'm in the middle of seaming a sweater that has been sitting around for about a year, catching up with some blog reading and see what's everyone is working on. I haven't made any major yarn purchase for a long time. The last time I bought yarn was a skein of wool handspun by a lady up in point reyes. It's actually not made out of cat hair if you're curious. The store lady pointed out that the lady whom spun the yarn own about 10 cats at her home, so she said her yarn is guaranteed cat hair blended. Just to clarify :) A couple of small projects that I finished last year.

Yes it has been way too long. I bet you started wondering if I'm still alive. Lots of unfortunate things happen last year which I rather not talk about. In the meantime, I’ll point to the good news...some of my photos featured in VK spotlight. I started my little freelance gig and I'm currently working on a couple of projects related to knitting which I hope to share with you all very soon.

So what's on the knitting front? Sad to say, there's still nothing much to show. I devoted most of last year knitting for family and friends so the only big project I finished for myself was the swing jacket. Well, It's all good. I hope the new year will bring me new inspiration. For some of you that I haven't spoken for ages. I apologize and I wish you well. You guys have always on my mind eventhough I didn't reach out to you.

For those that enquire about Narita Jacket. I want to let you know that I will keep you guys posted once I finish the pattern. The yarn I used for the jacket was discontinued, so I've decided to reknit the entire sweater. Which lead to gauge issue and rewriting the pattern. Please bear with me for a little longer and Thank you very much for leaving me nice words! Regular posting to the blog will now resume, in earnest!

Thank you so much for all your wonderful compliments on my sweater jacket! I really didn't expect all these words of praise. For those of you who inquired about the pattern, I promise I'll find time to write or may be publish here in the near future. Right now, there's quite a bit on my plate, so I hope you'll bear with me. Moving on, that shetland triangle shawl is almost done. I finally finished the very last row... just a few ends to weave in and some serious blocking. Next, I'm going tackle another work in progress that I started about three years ago. Yeah, did I say three years? I bet none of your knitting project is as old as this. Alrighty, I'm off to block that shawl. Have a pleasant week!

I'm still slowly knitting away at my stash. I have relearned to enjoy going through my stash and thinking of things I want to make rather than wasting money on more yarn I don't need. Here's my first finished project for the new year. This sweater idea was inspired by one of my favorite designer-setsuko torii. It was an easy, straight forward knit, so I'll not go into much details. In lieu of my stash busting affort, I also gave away a huge bag full of odd balls to my co-worker's granny, whom love to make beanies and matching scarves for her grand children. My co-worker told me grandma Nancy was super thrilled, which makes me even more happy to learn someone is making full use of yarn I no longer need.

...and the bad
*ehem* I caved in and bought some yarn last week with no pattern in mind. It was some discontinued rowan yarn. You know I'm weak when it comes to brown and tweed. I have no idea what I'll do with it so far, may be I'll make another cable sweater or something. A girl can never have too many brown cable sweater, right? Anyways, my goal is to stash busting till middle of this year and finish that long-neglected phildar swing jacket before march. Are you in with me? Hope your weekend was fun and filled with knitting goodness. I leave you with a picture I took last week. My latest obssession.

Last post for year zero seven

Thank you all folks for your well wishes. I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas. Mine was pretty quiet. I was home working throughout the holidays. However, I'm very happy Santa brought me a couple of cool gifts and some unexpected ones. I can't believe Christmas already came and gone. Felt like this year went by so fast. As some of you might know, this year has been tough. Although some things have stayed the same, many things have changed. Nonetheless, I'm grateful that I'm still in good health and surrounded by so many loving people who constantly giving me support. Thanks you again for listening and caring for me, as well as always being there for me. You know who you are :) Alrighty, I better stop rambling, see how I started to deviate from the subject. I was thinking to take a quick break to write about the recent finished project and get back to work. So, here you go, my last finished project for this year.

Pattern : Turquoise tunic from Rebecca knitting mag 31
Yarn : 4 cones of Habu Tsumugi in color 44
Needle : 4mm & 3.75mm bamboo circular
Cost for this project: $50

Notes about this project...Love the fit (after numerous mods ) and the drapey-ness of the sleeves. (I think that's what sold me when I first saw the pattern.) I made the smallest size for 30/32 bust. The pattern wasn't too hard to follow if you have never knit anything from Rebecca. It's rather simple with a few yarn overs, knit tbl and k2tog for the lace chart. And most importantly, I didn't spot any pattern error. A very good thing. I substituted the yarn with double stranded tsumugi silk and the gauge was spot on after the initial swatch. If you decide to make this sweater, be sure to measure your gauge. For some reason, my armholes was a little too small eventhough I got the right gauge. I added a few extra rows and reworked the cap sleeves. Wasn't too hard to do. The tsumugi silk yarn was also terrific to work with. Unlike any shiny silk blend that pills and breaks. It has a little tweedy-ness to it. Very pretty and soft!

Modifications...Lots of mods! Down from the bodice to the sleeves, the sleeves cap and the front neckline. The orginal pattern was more like a tunic dress rather than a top. It has a rather low cut V-neck lace panel on the front. Very sexy and pretty but definitely not for my body shape. Moreover, I'm the type of gal that prefer to throw on something simple and just run out the door. So I'm very happy all the modifications worked out just fine. I added a few rows to the sleeves cap and the armhole decreases, shortened the bodice close to five inches, about an inch on the belle sleeves. And lastly I opted for a simple V-neck on the front but kept the lace panel of the back to give the simple sweater a little spark - details of the back.

Okay! One more wip checked off the list and several more to go. Aside from knitting, I'll be working from home for the next few days. Sounds like fun huh! A little bit of sewing and a little bit of knitting

Finally, a of long overdue post about knitting and my one an only finished project since September. Eventhough it's not for me, I felt pretty darn good that I finally finished something. Cast on the day before thanksgiving. Knitted thoughout the holiday, bind off on thursday night, washed and blocked just in the nick of time for a friend's birthday over the weekend. Here's another shot of me modelling the scarf before I gave it away. Thanks for the lovely pattern Kathy. The scarf turned out so soft and cozy. I love it. I'm considering making another one for myself.

I've been sewing too. I made this linen tote bag for a very special friend, prior to my long histus back in october. It was just a simple pattern I whipped up over one weekend. There's a lot I like about this bag. The simplicity, the applique, the fabric, the hand sewn leather straps. And of course it was really satisfying to know my dear friend love it too.

Lastly, something for myself. A patchwork scarf I'm working on currently. There are a mix of habu mohair yarn, silk yarn, linen paper and boucle yarn...something totally random while waiting for that knitting mojo to return. Alrighty, I gotto get out and run some errands. Trying to get my knitting mojo back

Sorry I haven't been posting much lately. I have no excuses, it is just life. I've been going a little mild on the verbiage but partly due to being extremely busy at work since I got back from my trip. I had a wonderful time in Bali. Spent most of my days visiting galleries, talk to the locals, shopping, lounging, reading, sipping cocktails by the beach...how I missed those days. Anyways, back to reality. I've been seriously lacking in motivation for my current works in progress. I don't know why. I feel like I've lost my knitting mojo and I don't know how to get it back. I started several small project as gifts for the holiday but not sure if I like how they look so far. Nonetheless, there's still something knitting-related. I have another huge destash sale coming up. Took some pictures last week but haven't had the chance to put all the details together, so stay tuned for next post. I need to find home for some really yummy yarn. Till then, I wish you all a very happy thanksgiving. Be good and hope you get to knit a lot during the holiday.

In the mood for something blue

Thank you very much on your comments and suggestions on my previous post. To be honest with you, that top does looked a lot prettier in the picture than in real person. I knew that drapey neckline was not for me the minute I put it on. I wasn't mad that it's gone to the frog pond. Just a little bummped out cause the yarn already started to pill and fuzz up a little. Hope it'll still look okay when I decide to knit it up. So, what's next? I'm still stash busting. I started two new projects early last week, both in blue hues. Other than the white, grey, black and brown I wear on daily basis. I'm starting to add more colors to my wardrobe. I do like certain shades of blue, like indigo blue, some sort of turquiosey blue or even ocean blue. But never wear much of them. Though, blues in general remind me of a favorite pair of well-worn denim jeans. I've not knitted anything in blue for years, will see how things work out this time.

Revealed

Secret knitting revealed at last. Sorry I was kinda mysterious about this one. However to my dismay. I don't think it turned out as well as I had hoped. When I first saw this pattern on Berroco site, I thought it looks comfortable and elegant. In the same time, I was also looking forward to an easy knit for the tilli tomas silk yarn that I had purchased sometime ago. I printed out the pattern and happily cast on without any second thought that it might NOT look cute on me. In fact, it was a pretty smooth sailing knit. No major issue with the pattern except a minor mistake on the number of cast on stitches for the smallest size.

About a week into the knitting, half an hour of seaming, I'm found myself constanly having have to adjust that drapey neckline so that doesn't falls off my shoulders during a brief fifteen minutes photoshoot. It was really annoying. So after spending a whole chunk of my saturday morning thinking, hoping to salvage this top. I took out my scissors and the ball winder. And next I know you can imagine what I did. Oh well, atleast it wasn't so painful to unravel the entire top and I actually enjoyed working with those silk yarn. The color is gorgeous. Who knows someday I will be able to find a suitable pattern for it.

Anyways, enough of my ranting. How was your three day weekend? Did you get to rest, knit a lot or did something fun? Mine wasn't bad. Let see, I went to a ballroom dance class on friday nite. It was totally an impromtu thing that my co-worker invited me to. I learned some basics cha cha and rumba moves. It was kinda fun. Had some really yummy indian food after the dance class. I ordered the same old dishes for the fourth time but never got tired of eating it...chicken tikka masala and some garlic naan..delicious!! Saturday morning was boring, spend the entire morning looking at that drapeeey top. Got tired, went out and did some yarn shopping. Well, they are not for me. I did pretty good and managed to walk out with just a copy of the latest rowan for myself and some habu goodies for a friend. Sunday, I was home all day sewing and that was it. Oh! I also bought some painting supplies. Thanks to my dear friend Cassie's inspiration, I think I will spend some time working on this old hobby of mine very soon.

Well, despite that not so successful knitting, I do have some good things to share with you, some new projects and sewing. Will talk about it next time. And Carlene my dear, I just wanted to let you know I haven't forgot about your meme. I will get around it, I promise. Have a good week everyone!

Friday evening at seven

After a long hectic day at work, all I want to do is to come home and unwind. Sit at my balcony, watch the sunset, knit a few rows and listen to my recent discovered music . If you have not heard Terence B's. It's definitely worth checking out. I love his latest album - A tale of god's will. So beautifully written and composed, perfect music for a glass of wine and some mindless knitting. My favorite tracks - wading through, over there and ashe. A secret knitting is in progress and if work is not too crazy next week. I shall have a finish project to share with you. Have a pleasant evening and fabulous weekend!
